The birthplace of England on the beautiful Sussex coast, 1066 country surrounds the resort of Hastings, combining the ancient towns of Battle, Rye and Winchelsea with the Edwardian seaside town of Bexhill. Explore futher inland and discover anarea of outstanding natural beauty.

Winchelsea

A peaceful medieval town which, together with Rye, Hastings, Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich, became one of the Cinque Ports. In 1288 the town was laid out in a grid iron symmetrical pattern on top of the Iham hills, with the sea lapping at the foot of the cliffs. Today the peace and charm of Winchelsea is a far cry from the bustling port it once was. Now, instead of the sea, it adjoins pasture and National Trust farmland with access to a number of local footpaths.

Rye

Picturesque, with its cobbled streets and famous gatehouses, Rye is a wonderful place to visit. Mermaid street is replete with interesting antique, gift and art shops. Lamb house and the Ypres museum are also worth a visit.

Battle

As the name implies, this town surrounds the site of the 1066 battlefield and the Abbey, built to ease William the Conqueror's conscience. The town itself has a charming "not of this century" feel to it. As well as the normal essential shops, there are numerous boutiques and several excellent restaurants.

Hastings

This Victorian seaside town is now having a bit of a revival. The old favorites are still there of course: The castle, St. Clements caves, funicular railways, Country Park, and Sea life centre. The fishing sheds offer an extensive range of freshly caught fish and some of the best "fish and chip" restaurants in the country. The old town has lots of arts and antique shops as well as a dining experience for every taste and budget.
