The Sitting Room - The heart of the house

Strand House is lucky to have two sitting rooms. The main sitting room is full of comfy sofas, intimate seating areas and a large inglenook fireplace. The room has a roaring log fire and the fire wood is provided from sustainable foresty by Rother Forestry. Nothing is nicer than to sit beside it with a drink in your hand from the honesty bar. There is a boutique feel to the fabrics and furnishing used in the room and the bedrooms are furnished in to the same country house style.

At the back of the hotel is the Pink Sitting Room which is used as a reading room or for playing board games. Smaller than the main hotel one it is idea for quiet moments.

Woodland Garden at Strand House

We have about an acre of woodland garden which covers the hillside behind the house. It is a great place to explore as it has winding paths, hidden seating areas with views of the sea and faeries. The path will take you from the house, through thr garden, over the fences, up Strand Hill, through the medieval town gate and into the town of Winchelsea. Or you could walk to Rye along the famous 1066 Trail.

Japanese Garden

Five years ago we built a Japanese Garden which one of the few in Sussex. The garden has a large border planted with Acers, bamboo, pieris, nandina and other plants typical of a 'stroll garden'. A stroll garden is a winding path through a landscape that is supposed to represent Japan. Our large magnolia tree, which is stunning when in bloom in the spring is part of this layout. Traditionally in these gardens you would have a water basin (Natsume-bachi) for cleansing yourself after your journey. So we have one which is fed by a bamboo water spout and has a small paved area with a granite seat. We think it will make a stunning photo opportunity for brides at Strand House.

Flower Garden

The rest of the garden is given over to lawns and flower bed but has several plum trees, a very old Acer and a 'twisted' Hazel. We use the flowers from these beds to decorate the house during the summer, to put fresh flowers in the rooms and to decorate the tables. The garden is maintained by Ant who lives locally. Mary has her herb garden near to the kitchen to supply herbs for cooking, so that she can just nip out and pick some.

Beehives

At the rear of the garden in a secluded spot are our beehives. We have several of the WBC type which are traditional British ones using frames and a Warre eco-hive which allows the bees a much more natural existance. This hives has small windows in the side to allow you to view the bees at work and we have remote hive monitoring that sends data to a laptop. We use and sell the honey, comb and wax at Strand House and raise money for Bees for Development charity
