Fun beside the sea - family breaks in Rye
Rye is a great area to bring your family as there is so much to do. Lets start with beaches, Camber Sands is one of the finest beaches in the South East but it can get crowded so Winchelsea Beach is a good alternative at low tide as it is a lot quieter and along the cliffs at Fairlight there are things to see like the petrified forest and dinosaur fossils. Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a good alternative as the Wardens hut has lots of information and the trust runs children's activities.
On another day you can take the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway – built in 1927 it is a 1/3rd scale steam line that runs 14 miles from Dungerness to Hythe and you can hop off and walk to the beaches at Greatstone and Littlestone as well explore the creepy atmosphere at Dungerness RSBP Reserve (and the adults can visit Derek Jarmans garden,) and in the afternoon drive up to Port Lympne Wildlife Reserve or go over to the Rare Breeds Centre at Woodchurch.
Everyone should go and see one of the finest castles in England -Bodiam Castle and again during the summer they run children's events and from here it is a short drive along the A21 to the Bedgebury Pinetum which houses “Go Ape” a forest adventure experience or you might fancy going a couple of miles further north to Bewl Water which runs sailing, hydroballing and other adventure activities.
And at the end of the day, when it is time for dinner, we like to recommend Simply Italian in Rye or the New Inn - Winchelsea or the Queens Head - Icklesham as good child friendly eating places.
