B&B Rye

B&B Rye - a great place to visit historic gardens.

Guests are welcome to use the gardens at Strand House when staying in the B&B. Rye is surrounded by many other gardens to visit such as Pashley Manor and Great Dixter as well as Merriments, Marle Place, Scotney Castle and the famous Sissinghurst.

Woodland Garden at Strand House B&B Rye

We have about two acres of woodland garden which covers the hillside behind the B&B. It is a great place to explore as it has winding paths, hidden seating areas with views of the sea and faeries. The path will take you from the B&B up Strand Hill, through the medieval town gate and into the town of Winchelsea. Or you could walk to Rye along the famous 1066 Trail.

Japanese Garden

Last year we built a Japanese Garden which makes us one of the few B&Bs in Rye with one. The garden has a large border planted with Acers, bamboo, pieris, nandina and other plants typical of a 'stroll garden'.Our large magnolia tree, which is stunning when in bloom in the spring is part of this layout. Traditionally in these gardens you would have a water basin (Natsume-bachi) for cleansing yourself after your journey. So we have one which is fed by a bamboo water spout and has a small paved area with a granite seat. We think it will make a stunning photo opportunity for brides at Strand House B&B Rye.

Flower Garden

The rest of the garden is given over to lawns and flower bed but has several plum trees, a very old Acer and a 'twisted' Hazel. We use the flowers from these beds to decorate the house during the summer, to put fresh flowers in the rooms of the B&B and to decorate the tables. The garden is maintained by Helen - our wedding florist who comes down to Rye once a week bute sometimes stays at the B&B. Mary has her herb garden near to the kitchen to supply herbs for cooking, so that she can just nip out and pick some..
