Tourism around Rye

Strand House Local Attractions

Strand House is set in stunning countryside, a short walk from the sea and surrounded by a host of attractions. It is ideal for walking, bird watching, cycling, horse riding, sailing and kite surfing. We are close to a ancient towns, castles, museums, steam trains, world famous gardens and there is great shopping at Tenterden, Tunbridge Wells and Ashford Outlet Centre. Tourism around Rye is handled by 1066 Country or for Rye Town

Only an hour and half from central London, Strand House is an ideal weekend break.

  • Rye Town – full of little shops, tea rooms and winding street with old buildings and a Castle. Setting for the Mapp and Lucia stories by EF Benson
  • Winchelsea Town – preserved medieval town with a church, museum, parts of the old defensive walls. Wonderful deli and tea shop. England's smallest town.
  • Hastings Old Town - for period charm and funny little shops near the sea front
  • Tenterden - small town in the Weald which is great for shopping
  • History - the area has castles at Bodiam, Camber, Pevensey, Rye, a real battelfield at Battle, abbeys, historic houses and musuems. Also a miniature steam railway line and two full sized ones.
  • Gardens - Great Dixter, Merriment, Plashley Manor, Sissinghurst, Scotney, Batemans, Charleston, Bedgebury Pinetum and others.
  • Coast walks - along the sea shore to Fairlight or along the Royal Military Canal to Pett Level or to Camber castle. The Saxon Shore Way is a longer walk to Kent or Eastbourne. A short trip takes you to the eerie desolation of Dungeness
  • Inland Walks - Or there are plenty of walks inland along the 1066 Way or the South Downs. We are close to the Weald ANOB and the South Downs National Park
  • Beaches - sandy beach at Camber Sands or a secluded beach at Winchelsea
  • Bird Watching and Wild Life - 6 RSPB reserves in the area, Rye Nature Reserve

  • Horse riding - We can arrange horse-riding and have our own horse Granby. We can arrange either lessons or hacking out in the local area
  • Busy calendar of local events, local fetes, car shows, Battle of Rye weekend, Maritime weekend, Bonfire Night and Christmas Pageant
